CHARLIE CLIFFE

The Thousand Islands Boat Museum opened its doors in 2014 with a Cliffe Craft exhibit which honoured and recognized local boat builder Charlie Cliffe. The exhibit told the story of his valuable contribution to keep Thousand Islands boaters afloat for nearly seven decades.

Charlie was a Gananoque boat builder who specialized in wooden motor boats of several designs unique to his creativity. It is estimated that he built over 2,500 watercraft spanning his 67 year career, most of which ranged from the 16-foot Island design to the 25-foot Cruiser design.

When visitors to the TIBM came to see the Cliffe Craft exhibit they were often able to meet the builder himself in “Charlie’s Corner” where he would share stories of his many years on the River. The Museum was sorry to have to say goodbye to its friend as Charlie Cliffe passed away in February 2017.

Charlie Cliffe’s story is featured along with nine other local boatbuilders in the permanent Boathouse exhibit. Visit the Boat Museum and learn about the boats that were made in this area and the people who built them.
